Basic Ideas for Collecting African American Art
By Soror Laurel Duplessis
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has once again stepped outside the box with the introduction of Basic Ideas for Collecting African American Art. The Commission on Arts & Letters, under the leadership of Sorors Marcia Butler Holt and Dr. Wanda Goins Brockington, entrusted this wonderful project to the hands of Soror Laurel Duplessis. The writing of this book was truly a labor of love for Soror Duplessis. When Soror Duplessis accepted the assignment to write the book, she was facing a life threatening health problem. However, she was determined to finish what she started and, oh, what an inspiring finished project! Delta Sigma Theta’s commitment to the arts continues to be manifested in this resource booklet. Basic Ideas takes readers on a journey from Soror Duplessis’ first major art purchase to the different options of purchasing art to giving tips on how to protect your art. Soror Duplessis encourages readers to know their options for buying art and to choose art based on what appeals to the individual. Basic Ideas spotlights many works of art and highlights the work of several artists including Soror Duplessis, Paul Goodnight, Mei Tei Sing Smith, Hubert Jackson and Richard Ward. “The African American artists in this booklet have individually and collectively contributed to the legacy of American culture. It is because of these artists that this booklet was written to educate and inspire others in collecting art”. If you have yet to purchase your first piece of art, Basic Ideas for Collecting African-American Art will inspire you to “experience art”.
Please contact the National Headquarters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at (202) 986-2400 to order a copy for your collection.
