“Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Preparing Young Women for the 21st Century”, the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy was created out of an urgent sense that bold action was needed to provide resources to young, African American females (ages 11-14) from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. Specifically, we augment their scholarship in math, science, and technology; their leadership through service learning; and their sisterhood, defined as the cultivation and maintenance of positive relationships. A primary goal of the program is to prepare young females for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.
The women of the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. have extended the application period for Soror referrals to the program. Girls must be between the ages of 11 – 14 (must be in middle school for the 2011-2012 school year and 11 by August 1, 2011) to participate in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy. Delta Sigma Theta at the Kappa Alpha Psi Centennial Celebration
Our National President, Soror Cynthia Butler-McIntyre and National Second Vice President, Soror Chelsea Hayes were both in attendance for the Kappa Alpha Psi Centennial Celebration. More than 75 sorors from Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter, Louisville Alumnae Chapter, Anderson-Muncie Alumnae Chapter, South Bend Alumnae Chapter and Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter graced Indianapolis’ expanded convention center halls, all dressed in red, and adorned with elephant pins, pearls, or violets. Soror President McIntyre gave greetings on behalf of Delta Sigma Theta, acknowledged the Sorors in the room, presented a gift to the 100-year old fraternity’s National Polemarch, Dwayne Murray, and recited a very moving poem that had the audience on their feet with applause.
The very next day, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. recognized and honored members of the Indianapolis community making a difference and Soror Tanya Walton Pratt, Federal Court Judge for the state of Indiana was awarded the Distinguished Humanitarian Award, the highest award presented to a non-member.
Delta Que Day of Purpose

Spring has Sprung and it’s time to put our Purpose in Motion. Save the Date of Saturday, April 23, 2011 for our Delta/Que Day of Purpose Part 2. Those of you who had the opportunity to participate for round one did a wonderful job and I know we agree that it was a fun and rewarding experience. We will return again to Briarwood Health and Rehabilitation Center and our primary focus this time will be the maintenance of the exterior and landscaping. Sorors, it will be just exciting as it sounds. One of our targeted goals is to beautify the Courtyard with Patio furniture and accessories. Sorors, if you are someone you know has a contact with a business who would be willing to donate to this cause, please let us know. We will also be speaking with the Omegas about members of our Organizations making donations to purchase landscaping items as well. Sorors, feel free to share any ideas you might have in making this project a success. Please be on the lookout for exciting updates to this fabulous Day of Service. There will be 2 shifts, 8:45 to 11:30 and 11:30 to 2:00 with a group picture at 11:30. Allergies preventing you from working outside? I’m sure we can find something inside for you to do. Sign up sheets will be available at the April Chapter Meeting. What a great way to give back for the Easter Weekend. That evening we will be hosting the Spring edition of the Scholarship Matinee called “A White Affair” at Cloud 9 Bar and Grill from 6pm to 10pm.
