Delta Sigma Theta 2012 SOROR Scholarship Application

General Information, Guidelines and Instruction:

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL DISQUALIFY THE APPLICATION FROM CONSIDERATION.

 Δ       Each year, upon availability of funds, the Scholarship and Education Committee will award a scholarship to financial members of the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter. 

 Δ       The applicant must be a financial and active member of the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for one year prior to the application, as well as, being financial in the year of application.  A financial member is defined as one who pays both local and national dues.  An active member is defined as one who serves on at least one (1) committee for the current sorority fiscal year.

 Δ       Any soror seeking to further her career is eligible to receive the soror scholarship. 

 Δ       Upon application, the applicant must show proof of acceptance into a program.  However, prior to receiving any scholarship funds from the chapter, the soror must show proof of enrollment.  No funds will be released to the soror without proof of enrollment.  Proof of enrollment is due by December of the year of application or scholarship funds will be forfeited. 

 Δ       The applicant must complete all four (4) parts of the application and sign the Certification.

 Δ       All applications must be post marked by the first Saturday in May in the year of application

 Δ       All applicants must submit one (1) sealed letter of recommendation from a financial soror of the Indianapolis, Alumnae Chapter – preferably a committee chair.

Δ       The scholarship is not renewable and each soror must reapply annually.

The 2011-2012 Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute Applications Now Available!

 

The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully) Institute, a mentoring program for African-American girls in high school, sponsored by the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is recruiting new members.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public service organization founded in 1913 by 22 black women dedicated to uplifting their community in the areas of educational development, economic development, and many other powerful ways. The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute, is one of Delta’s flagship programs that has been in existence for well over 40 years.

The goals for the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute are: to instill the need to excel academically; to provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success to assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond; and to create compassionate, caring, community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.

The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute is designed for young women:

  •  Who are in grades 9-12
  •  Who have potential, but need guidance, support and skills to achieve success
  •  Who are interested in developing leadership skills
  •  Who are actively pursuing college and/or career options
  •  Who need encouragement and support in pursuit of higher learning.

 Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute activities include participation in community service projects, cultural events, and attending educational workshops where we present topics such as choosing the perfect college, career choices, social and professional etiquette, self-esteem building, wellness, money management and of course having lots of fun.

Interviewing Skills Workshop

The Scholarship Committee is hosting an Interview Skills Workshop on
Saturday, February 19th at First Baptist Church, North Indianapolis.

The workshop is designed to prepare young ladies from area high schools
for upcoming scholarship, internship & employment opportunities.

The workshop is FREE, but participants must pre-register in order to
attend. They should email their information to scholarship@dstiac.com.

Delta Que Day of Purpose

The Ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and The Men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. will participate in their Annual Day of purpose Saturday, December 11, 2010.

Service at the Briarwood Health and Rehabilitation Center

Members of the Sorority and Fraternity will serve at the Briarwood Health and Rehabilitation Center at 3640 Central Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46205 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  They be painting, cleaning, organizing, and providing assistance with any and everything else the residents and the facility may need to have done.  The Delta Dears, Senior Omegas and members of the Delta GEMS will facilitate a Christmas Program for the Residents.  Community service is open to members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc..  Members may still sign up to work a shift by contacting Second Vice President Carolyn Sanders at vpresident2@dstiac.com.  Represent and come out and join us. Please spread the word about the Delta/Que Day of Purpose.

Tis’ the Season Scholarship Matinee

The community is invited to come out and party with the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Cloud 9 located at 5150 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202.  The Tis the Season Scholarship Matinee is an annual scholarship fundraiser for both the Sorority and Fraternity.  Cost is $10 in advance and $15 at the door.  For tickets contact vpresident2@dstiac.com.  Tickets can also be purchased on the east side from The Jewelry Lady Fine Jewelry Store, Mon. – Thurs and Sat. from 10 am to 6pm at 7427 N. Interviewing Skills Workshop

IAC is sponsoring an Interview Skills Workshop; open to minority young ladies attending any area high school. It will be held on Saturday, February 27th at Robinson Community A.M.E. Church, 4602 N. College Avenue, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. The workshop is designed to prepare students for scholarship, internship and employment opportunities. Financial Aid from Delta Sigma Theta

This application for financial aid is for DELTAS ONLY.  All application packets must be received no later than April 30th with a $20.00 non-refundable application fee in a money order or certified check made payable to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Applicants will also need an official transcript, in a sealed envelope from the current last degree-granting institution and a letter of recommendation, in a sealed envelope from each listed reference. The DST financial aid application with instructions consist of nine (9) pages.

All parts of the application must be completed. It states on the application that omission of any part will eliminate the application from consideration check point # 3. Also check the Note that states Part IX is to be completed only by applicants who are financial members of the organization and are applying for the special scholarships which are awarded on the basis of meritorious achievement.

The financial aid application is for undergraduate/collegiate, graduate or technical work. Freshmen may apply for financial aid if they have completed at least one semester of college work. Sophomores and juniors may apply for undergraduate/collegiate scholarship awards. Seniors graduating from college may apply for graduate awards for advance degrees. The financial aid awards will be paid upon confirmation of registration in school for summer or regular terms of the fiscal year for which the aid is granted. The awards are for tuition and school expenses for one (1) year. Candidates may apply and receive financial assistance for two (2) years.
